Let’s start:- simple past tense with examples in punjabi
Past Indefinite Tense (ਪਾਸਟ ਇਨਡੈਫੀਨੇਟ ਟੈਂਸ )
ਪਹਿਚਾਣ :- ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ, ਏ,ਈ, (ਗਿਆ,ਦਿਤਾ,ਆਇਆ) ਆਦਿ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਟੈਂਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਸਟ ਇਨਡੈਫੀਨੇਟ ਟੈਂਸ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਟੈਂਸ ਵਿਚ Verb ਦੀ ਦੂਜੀ ਫਾਰਮ (v2)ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜੇਕਰ ਵਾਕ ਨੂੰ negative, interrogative, ਜਾਂ interrogative negative ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ did ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਰਬ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।
Rules in English:-
| 1) | Simple | Sub + v2 + obj. |
| 2) | Negative | Sub+ did not+ v1+ obj. |
| 3) | Interrogative | Did +Sub+ v1 + obj? |
| 4) | Interrogative Negative | Did +Sub+ not+ v1 + obj? |
Examples:-

| 2) | ਅਸੀਂ ਮੇਲਾ ਨਹੀ ਦੇਖਿਆ। | We did not see a fair. |
| 3) | ਕੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਮੇਲਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ? | Did we see a fair? |
| 4) | ਕੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਮੇਲਾ ਨਹੀ ਦੇਖਿਆ? | Did we not see a fair? |

| 4) | ਕੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਨਵੀ ਕਾਰ ਨਹੀ ਖ਼ਰੀਦੀ? | Did my father not buy a new car? |
(Note :- Did ਨਾਲ ਵਰਬ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਫਾਰਮ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।)
ਜੇਕਰ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ “ਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ“ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ Never ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। “Never” ਨਾਲ did not ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਸਿਰਫ verb ਦੀ ਦੂਜੀ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਵੇ :- ਮੈ ਕਦੀ ਝੂਠ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲਿਆ। ( I never told a lie)
ਭੂਤ ਕਾਲ :-ਇਸ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੋ ਸਮਾਂ ਬੀਤ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਸ ਬੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਮੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੂਤ ਕਾਲ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Past Indefinite Tense
Past indefinite indicates that the action described in a sentence has happened before and is not a current happening.
Example:
She watched television.
The example indicates that the action of watching was an event of the past.
A verb exists in past indefinite tense when it is in its simple second form.
Example:
The boy stood at the bus stop.
The above example is also that of past indefinite tense. Notice that the second form of verb stood is used which represents that time of action to be of past.
